My soul doth magnify my YAH, and my spirit hath rejoiced in EL my Saviour; For HE that is mighty hath done to me great things; and Holy is HIS Name.  Now unto HIM who is ever present in my helpless estate; who is able to keep me from falling and to present me faultless before the presence of His Glory with exceeding joy, unto the King Eternal, Immortal, Invisible, the only wise EL our Saviour be honour and glory and majesty, dominion and power both now and for ever Halleluyah!

JEREMIAH 38

1And Shephatyah son of Mattan, and Geḏalyahu son of Pashhur, and Yuḵal son of Shelemyahu, and Pashhur son of Malkiyah heard the words which Yirmeyahu had spoken to all the people, saying,

2“Thus said יהוה, ‘He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by scarcity of food, and by pestilence, but whoever goes over to the Chaldeans shall live. And his life shall be as a prize to him, and he shall live.’

3“Thus said יהוה, ‘This city is certainly given into the hand of the sovereign of Baḇel’s army, and he shall take it.’ ”

4Then the heads said to the sovereign, “Please, let this man be put to death, because he is weakening the hands of the men of battle who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man does not seek the peace of this people, but the evil.”

5And Tsiḏqiyahu the sovereign said, “Look, he is in your hand. For the sovereign is unable to do any matter against you.”

6And they took Yirmeyahu and threw him into the dungeon of Malkiyahu the sovereign’s son, which was in the court of the guard, and they let Yirmeyahu down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mud. So Yirmeyahu sank in the mud.

7And Eḇeḏ-Meleḵ the Kushite, one of the eunuchs, who was in the sovereign’s house, heard that they had put Yirmeyahu in the dungeon. And the sovereign was sitting at the Gate of Binyamin,

8And Eḇeḏ-Meleḵ came from the sovereign’s house and spoke to the sovereign, saying,

9“My master the sovereign, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Yirmeyahu the prophet, whom they have thrown into the dungeon, and he is likely to die from hunger in the place where he is, for there is no more bread in the city.”

10And the sovereign commanded Eḇeḏ-Meleḵ the Kushite, saying, “Take thirty men from here with you, and lift Yirmeyahu the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies.”

11So Eḇeḏ-Meleḵ took the men with him and went into the house of the sovereign under the treasury, and took old clothes and old rags from there, and let them down by ropes into the dungeon to Yirmeyahu.

12And Eḇeḏ-Meleḵ the Kushite said to Yirmeyahu, “Please put these old clothes and rags under your armpits, under the ropes.” And Yirmeyahu did so,

13and they pulled Yirmeyahu up with ropes and lifted him out of the dungeon. And Yirmeyahu remained in the court of the guard.

14Then Tsiḏqiyahu the sovereign sent and had Yirmeyahu the prophet brought to him at the third entrance of the House of יהוה. And the sovereign said to Yirmeyahu, “I am asking you a matter. Do not hide a matter from me.”

15And Yirmeyahu said to Tsiḏqiyahu, “If I declare it to you, shall you not put me to death? And if I give you advice, you shall not listen to me.”

16But Tsiḏqiyahu the sovereign swore secretly to Yirmeyahu, saying, “As יהוה lives, who made us this life, I do not put you to death, nor do I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

17And Yirmeyahu said to Tsiḏqiyahu, “Thus said יהוה, the Elohim of hosts, the Elohim of Yisra’ĕl, ‘If you do indeed surrender to the heads of the sovereign of Baḇel, then your being shall live, and this city not be burned with fire. And you and your house shall live.

18‘But if you do not surrender to the heads of the sovereign of Baḇel, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.’ ”

19Then Tsiḏqiyahu the sovereign said to Yirmeyahu, “I am afraid of the Yehuḏim who have gone over to the Chaldeans, lest they give me into their hand, and they maltreat me.”

20But Yirmeyahu said, “They shall not hand you over. Please, obey the voice of יהוה which I speak to you, and let it be well with you, and your life be spared.

21“But if you refuse to surrender, this is the word that יהוה has shown me:

22‘Then see, all the women who are left in the sovereign of Yehuḏah’s house shall be surrendered to the heads of the sovereign of Baḇel, and see, they are saying, “Your close friends have set upon you and prevailed against you; your feet have sunk in the mire; they have turned away again.”

23‘And they are going to surrender all your wives and children to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but be taken by the hand of the sovereign of Baḇel, and this city shall be burned with fire.’ ”

24Then Tsiḏqiyahu said to Yirmeyahu, “Let no one know of these words, and you shall not die.

25“But if the heads hear that I have spoken with you, and they come to you and say to you, ‘Declare to us now what you have said to the sovereign, and also what the sovereign said to you. Do not hide it from us, and we do not put you to death,’

26then you shall say to them, ‘I presented my petition before the sovereign, not to send me back to the house of Yonathan to die there.’ ”

27And all the heads came to Yirmeyahu and asked him. And he informed them according to all these words that the sovereign had commanded. And they said no more to him, for the matter was not heard.

28So Yirmeyahu remained in the court of the guard until the day that Yerushalayim was taken, and he was there when Yerushalayim was taken.

JEREMIAH 39

1In the ninth year of Tsiḏqiyahu sovereign of Yehuḏah, in the tenth month, Neḇuḵaḏretstsar sovereign of Baḇel and all his army came against Yerushalayim, and besieged it.

2In the eleventh year of Tsiḏqiyahu, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the city was broken into.

3And all the heads of the sovereign of Baḇel came in and sat in the Middle Gate: Nĕrg̅al-Shar’etser, Samgar-Neḇo, Sarseḵim, Raḇsaris, Nĕrg̅al-Sarezer, Raḇmag̅, and all the rest of the heads of the sovereign of Baḇel.

4And it came to be, when Tsiḏqiyahu the sovereign of Yehuḏah and all the men of battle saw them, they fled and left the city by night, by way of the sovereign’s garden, by the gate between the two walls. And he went out toward the desert plain.

5But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them and overtook Tsiḏqiyahu in the desert plains of Yeriḥo. And they captured him, and brought him up to Neḇuḵaḏnetstsar sovereign of Baḇel, to Riḇlah in the land of Ḥamath, where he spoke judgment on him.

6And the sovereign of Baḇel slew the sons of Tsiḏqiyahu before his eyes in Riḇlah. The sovereign of Baḇel also slew all the nobles of Yehuḏah.

7And he put out the eyes of Tsiḏqiyahu, and bound him with bronze shackles to bring him to Baḇel.

8And the Chaldeans burned the house of the sovereign and the houses of the people with fire, and they broke down the walls of Yerushalayim.

9And Neḇuzaraḏan, chief of the guard, exiled to Baḇel the remnant of the people who remained in the city and those who defected to him, with the rest of the people who were left.

10But Neḇuzaraḏan, chief of the guard, left in the land of Yehuḏah the poor people, who had naught whatever, and gave them vineyards and fields on the same day.

11And Neḇuḵaḏretstsar the sovereign of Baḇel gave an order concerning Yirmeyahu to Neḇuzaraḏan, chief of the guard, saying,

12“Take him and look after him, and do no harm whatsoever to him, but do to him even as he shall speak to you.”

13And Neḇuzaraḏan, chief of the guard, and Neḇushazban the Raḇsaris, Nĕrg̅al-Shar’etser the Raḇmag̅, and all the sovereign of Baḇel’s chief officers sent,

14and had Yirmeyahu taken from the court of the guard, and gave him to Geḏalyahu son of Aḥiqam, son of Shaphan, to take him home. And he dwelt among the people.

15And the word of יהוה had come to Yirmeyahu while he was shut up in the court of the guard, saying,

16“Go, and you shall speak to Eḇeḏ-Meleḵ the Kushite, saying, ‘Thus said יהוה of hosts, the Elohim of Yisra’ĕl, “See, I am bringing My words upon this city for evil and not for good, and they shall be before you in that day.

17“And I shall deliver you in that day,” declares יהוה, “so that you are not given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid.

18“For I shall rescue you, and you shall not fall by the sword. But your life shall be as a prize to you, for you have put your trust in Me,” declares יהוה.’ ”

JEREMIAH 40

1The word that came to Yirmeyahu from יהוה after Neḇuzaraḏan, chief of the guard, had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him bound in chains among all the exiles from Yerushalayim and Yehuḏah, who were being exiled to Baḇel.

2And the chief of the guard took Yirmeyahu and said to him, “יהוה your Elohim has spoken this evil on this place.

3“And יהוה has brought it on, and has done, as He has said. Because you have sinned against יהוה, and did not obey His voice, therefore this matter has come upon you.

4“And now, see, I loosen you today from the chains that were on your hand. If it seems good to you to come with me to Baḇel, come, and I shall look after you. But if it seems wrong for you to come with me to Baḇel, remain here. See, all the land is before you, go wherever it seems good and right for you to go.”

5And before he replied, Neḇuzaraḏan said, “Or go back to Geḏalyah son of Aḥiqam, son of Shaphan, whom the sovereign of Baḇel has made governor over the cities of Yehuḏah, and dwell with him among the people, or go wherever it seems right for you to go.” And the chief of the guard gave him provisions and a gift and let him go.

6So Yirmeyahu went to Geḏalyah son of Aḥiqam, to Mitspah, and dwelt with him among the people who were left in the land.

7And all the commanders of the armies who were in the fields, they and their men, heard that the sovereign of Baḇel had made Geḏalyahu son of Aḥiqam governor in the land, and had put him in charge of the men, and women, and children, and the poor of the land who had not been exiled to Baḇel.

8So they came to Geḏalyah at Mitspah – Yishma‛ĕl the son of Nethanyahu, and Yoḥanan and Yonathan the sons of Qarĕaḥ, and Serayah the son of Tanḥumeth, and the sons of Ophai the Netophathite and Yezanyahu the son of a Ma‛aḵathite, they and their men.

9And Geḏalyahu son of Aḥiqam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid of serving the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the sovereign of Baḇel, and it shall be well with you.

10“And I, see, I am dwelling at Mitspah, to serve the Chaldeans who come to us. But you, gather wine and summer fruit and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities which you have taken.”

11Also, when all the Yehuḏim who were in Mo’aḇ, and among the Ammonites, and in Eḏom, and who were in all the lands, heard that the sovereign of Baḇel had left a remnant of Yehuḏah, and that he had set over them Geḏalyahu son of Aḥiqam, son of Shaphan,

12then all the Yehuḏim returned from all the places where they had been driven, and came to the land of Yehuḏah, to Geḏalyahu at Mitspah, and gathered wine and summer fruit in large quantities.

13And Yoḥanan son of Qarĕaḥ and all the commanders of the army that were in the fields came to Geḏalyahu at Mitspah,

14and they said to him, “Do you know that Ba‛alis sovereign of the Ammonites has sent Yishma‛ĕl son of Nethanyah to take your life?” But Geḏalyahu son of Aḥiqam would not believe them.

15Then Yoḥanan son of Qarĕaḥ spoke secretly to Geḏalyahu in Mitspah, saying, “Please let me go and smite Yishma‛ĕl son of Nethanyah, without anyone knowing it. Why should he murder you, and so let all the Yehuḏim who are gathered to you be scattered, and the remnant in Yehuḏah perish?”

16But Geḏalyahu son of Aḥiqam said to Yoḥanan son of Qarĕaḥ, “Do not do this matter, for what you are saying about Yishma‛ĕl is not true.”

PSALM 74

1O Elohim, why do You forever reject us? Why does Your displeasure smoke Against the sheep of Your pasture?

2Remember Your congregation. You did purchase of old, The tribe of Your inheritance. You did redeem, This Mount Tsiyon where You have dwelt.

3Lift up Your steps to the endless ruins; The enemy has done all evil in the set-apart placea.

4Your adversaries have roared In the midst of Your meeting places; They have set up their own signs as signs.

5It seems as if one had lifted up Axes among the thick trees.

6And now all its carved work, They have broken down with axe and hammer.

7They have set fire to Your set-apart place, They have profaned the dwelling place of Your Name to the ground.

8They said in their hearts, “Let us suppress them altogether.” They burned all the meeting places of Ěl in the land.

9We do not see our signs, There is no longer a prophet, Nor any among us who knows how long.

10O Elohim, how long would the adversary reproach? Would the enemy despise Your Name forevera?

11Why do You hold back Your hand, even Your right hand? From the midst of Your bosom – end it!

12For Elohim is my Sovereign from of old, Working deliverance in the midst of the earth.

13You divided the sea by Your might; You broke the heads of the sea serpents in the waters.

14You broke the heads of Liwiathan in pieces, You made him food for the people Living in the wilderness.

15You did cleave open the fountain and the flood, You did dry up mighty rivers.

16The day is Yours, the night is Yours too, You have established the light and the sun.

17You have set all the borders of the earth, You have made summer and winter.

18Remember this: the enemy has reproached יהוה, And a foolish people has despised Your Namea.

19Do not give the being of Your turtledove to the wild beast! Do not forget the life of Your afflicted ones forever.

20Look to the covenant, For the dark places of the earth are filled With haunts of violence.

21Let not the crushed one return ashamed! Let the poor and needy praise Your Name.

22Arise, O Elohim, plead Your own cause, Remember how the foolish man reproaches You daily.

23Do not forget the voice of Your enemies, The uproar of those rising up against You increases continually.

PSALM 75

1We shall give thanks to You, O Elohim, we shall give thanks! And Your Name is near! Your wonders shall be declared!

2“When I seize the appointed time, It is I who judge in uprightness.

3“The earth and all its inhabitants are melted; It is I who set its columns firm. Selah.

4“I said to the boasters, ‘Do not boast,’ And to the wrong, ‘Do not lift up the horn.

5“Do not lift up your horn on high (You speak with a stiff neck).’ ”

6For exaltations are neither from the east, Nor from the west nor from the wilderness.

7But Elohim is the Judge – He puts down one, And exalts another.

8For a cup is in the hand of יהוה, And the wine shall foam; It is filled with a mixture, And He pours it out. All the wrong of the earth drink, Draining it to the dregs.

9But I, I declare forever, I sing praises to the Elohim of Ya‛aqoḇ.

10“And all the horns of the wrong I cut off; The horns of the righteous are lifted up.”

PSALM 76

1In Yehuḏah Elohim is known; His Name is great in Yisra’ĕl.

2And His booth is in Shalĕma, And His dwelling place in Tsiyon.

3There He broke the arrows of the bow, The shield and the sword and the battle-axe. Selah.

4You are resplendent, More excellent than mountains of prey.

5The stout-hearted have been stripped; They slept their sleep; And none of the mighty men have found their hands.

6At Your rebuke, O Elohim of Ya‛aqoḇ, Both the rider and horse lay stunned.

7You, You are to be feared; And who would stand in Your presence When You are displeased?

8From heaven You shall cause judgment to be heard; The earth shall fear, and shall be still,

9When Elohim arises to right-ruling, To save all the meek of the earth. Selah.

10For the wrath of mankind praises You, With the remainder of wrath You gird Yourself!

11Make vows to יהוה your Elohim, and pay them. Let all who are around Him bring presents To the One to be feared.

12He cuts off the spirit of leaders, He is awesome to the sovereigns of the earth!

PSALM 77

1My voice is to Elohim, and I cry; My voice is to Elohim, and He listened to me.

2In the day of my distress I sought יהוה; My hand was stretched out in the night And it did not cease, My being refused to be comforted.

3I remembered Elohim, and groaned; I complained, and my spirit grew faint. Selah.

4You ceased the watches of my eyes, I was too troubled to speak.

5I have thought about the days of old, The years long past.

6I remember my song in the night, I meditate within my heart, And my spirit searches diligently.

7Would יהוה reject forever, And never again be pleased?

8Has His kindness ceased forever, Has the promise failed for all generations?

9Has Ěl forgotten to show favour? Has He shut up His compassions in displeasure? Selah.

10And I said, “This is my grief: That the right hand of the Most High has changed.”

11I remember the deeds of Yah, For I remember Your wonders of old.

12And I shall meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds.

13Your way, O Elohim, is in Set-apartnessa; Who is a great Ěl like Elohim?

14You are the Ěl who does wonders; You have made known Your strength among the peoples.

15By Your arm You have redeemed Your people, The sons of Ya‛aqoḇ and Yosĕph. Selah.

16The waters saw You, O Elohim; The waters saw You, they were afraid; The depths also trembled.

17The clouds poured out water; The heavens rumbled; Also, Your arrows flashed back and forth.

18The voice of Your thunder rolled along; Lightnings lit up the world; The earth trembled and shook.

19Your way was in the sea, And Your path in the great waters, And Your footsteps were not known.

20You did lead Your people like a flock By the hand of Mosheh and Aharon.

PSALM 78

1My people, give ear to my Toraha, Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

2I open my mouth in a parable; I utter riddles of old,

3Which we have heard and known, For our fathers have related them to us.

4We do not hide them from their children, Relating to the generation to come the praises of יהוה, And His strength and His wonders which He has done.

5For He raised a witness in Ya‛aqoḇ, And set a Torah in Yisra’ĕl, Which He commanded our fathers, To teach them to their children;

6That it might be known to a generation to come, To children who would be born, To rise up and relate them to their children,

7And place their trust in Elohim, And not forget the works of Ěl, But watch over His commands,

8And not be like their fathers, A stubborn and rebellious generation, A generation which did not prepare its heart, Whose spirit was not steadfast to Ěl.

9The children of Ephrayim, armed bowmen, Turned back in the day of battle.

10They did not guard the covenant of Elohim, And they refused to walk in His Torah,

11And they forgot His deeds And His wonders which He had shown them.

12He did wonders in the sight of their fathers, In the land of Mitsrayim, in the field of Tso‛an.

13He split the sea and caused them to pass through, And He made the waters stand up like a heap,

14And led them with the cloud by day, And all the night with a light of fire.

15He split the rocks in the wilderness, And made them drink, as from the great depths,

16And brought forth streams from the rock, And caused waters to come down as rivers.

17Yet they sinned still more against Him To rebel against the Most High in the desert.

18And they tried Ěl in their heart By asking food according to their desire.

19And they spoke against Elohim. They said, “Is Ěl able to set a table in the wilderness?

20“Look, He struck the rock, So that the waters gushed out, And the streams overflowed. Is He able to give bread also? Would He provide meat for His people?”

21Therefore יהוה heard, and He was wroth; So a fire was kindled against Ya‛aqoḇ, And displeasure also came up against Yisra’ĕl,

22Because they did not believe in Elohim, Neither did they trust in His deliverance.

23Yet He had commanded the clouds above, And opened the doors of the heavens,

24And He rained down manna on them to eat, And He gave them the grain of the heavens.

25Men ate bread of the mighty; He sent them provisions to satisfaction.

26He made an east wind blow in the heavens; And by His power He brought in the south wind.

27And He rained meat on them like the dust, And winged birds like the sand of the seas,

28And let them fall in the midst of His camp, All around His Dwelling Place.

29So they ate and were completely satisfied, For He brought them what they desired.

30They had not turned away from their desire, Their food was still in their mouths,

31When the wrath of Elohim came against them, And He slew among their fat ones, And He struck down the choice ones of Yisra’ĕl.

32In spite of all this they still sinned, And did not believe in His wonders.

33So He ended their days in a breath, And their years in trouble.

34When He slew them, then they sought Him, And they returned and did earnestly seek Ěl.

35And they remembered that Elohim was their rock, And the Most High Ěl their redeemer.

36But they flattered Him with their mouth, And they lied to Him with their tongue,

37For their heart was not steadfast with Him, And they were not true to His covenant.

38But He, the Compassionate One, Pardoned crookedness, And did not destroy them. And many a time He turned His displeasure away, And did not stir up all His wrath.

39For He remembered that they were but flesh, A passing breath that does not return.

40How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness, And grieved Him in the desert!

41And again and again they tried Ěl, And provoked the Set-apart One of Yisra’ĕl.

42They did not remember His hand, The day when He redeemed them from the adversary,

43How He worked His signs in Mitsrayim, And His wonders in the field of Tso‛an.

44He turned their rivers into blood, And they could not drink their streams.

45He sent among them swarms of flies which devoured them, And frogs which destroyed them,

46And gave their crops to the caterpillar, And their labour to the locust.

47He destroyed their vines with hail, And their sycamore trees with frost,

48And gave their beasts over to the hail, And their livestock to bolts of fire.

49He sent on them the burning of His displeasure, Wrath, and rage, and distress, A deputation of messengers of evils.

50He made a path for His displeasure; He did not spare their being from death, But gave their life over to the plague.

51And He smote all the first-born in Mitsrayim, The first-fruits of strength in the tents of Ḥam,

52Then made His own people go forth like sheep, And led them in the wilderness like a flock.

53And He led them on safely, And they did not fear, But the sea covered their enemies.

54And He brought them to the border of His set-apart place, This mountain which His right hand had gained,

55And drove out nations before them, And allotted them a measured inheritance, And made the tribes of Yisra’ĕl dwell in their tents.

56Yet they tried and rebelled Against the Most High Elohim, And did not guard His witnesses,

57But they turned back And acted treacherously like their fathers; They twisted like a treacherous bow.

58For they enraged Him with their high places, And moved Him to jealousy with their carved images.

59When Elohim heard this, He was wroth, And greatly despised Yisra’ĕl,

60And He left the Dwelling Place of Shiloh, The Tent which He had set up among men.

61And He gave His strengtha into captivity, And His comelinessb into the hand of the adversary.

62And He gave His people over to the sword, And He was wroth with His inheritance.

63His young men were consumed by fire, And His maidens were not praised.

64His priests fell by the sword, And their widows could not weep.

65Then יהוה awoke as one asleep, As a mighty man who shouts because of wine.

66And He smote His adversaries backward, He put them to an everlasting reproach.

67Then He rejected the tent of Yosĕph, And did not choose the tribe of Ephrayim,

68But chose the tribe of Yehuḏah, Mount Tsiyon, which He loved.

69And He built His set-apart place like the heights, Like the earth He founded it forever.

70And He chose Dawiḏ His servant, And took him from the sheepfolds;

71He brought him in from tending the ewes, To shepherd Ya‛aqoḇ His people, And Yisra’ĕl His inheritance.

72And he shepherded them According to the integrity of his heart, And led them by the skill of his hands.

PSALM 79

1O Elohim, the gentilesa have come into Your inheritance; They have defiled Your set-apart Hĕḵal; They turned Yerushalayim into ruins.

2They have given the dead bodies of Your servants As food for the birds of the heavens, The flesh of Your kind ones to the wild beast of the earth.

3They have poured out their blood Like water all around Yerushalayim, With no one to bury them.

4We have become a reproach to our neighbours, A scorn and a mockery to those who are around us.

5How long, O יהוה, Would You be enraged forever? Would Your jealousy burn like fire?

6Pour out Your wrath on the gentiles Who have not known You, And on reigns that have not called on Your Name.

7For they have devoured Ya‛aqoḇ, And laid waste his pasture.

8Do not remember against us The crookednesses of the fathers! Let Your compassion speedily meet us, For we have been greatly weakened.

9Help us, O Elohim of our deliverance, For the sake of the esteem of Your Name. And deliver us, and cover over our sins, For Your Name’s sake!

10Why should the gentiles say, “Where is their Elohim?” Let the vengeance of the outpoured blood of Your servants Be known among the gentiles, Before our eyes.

11Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You. According to the greatness of Your arm Preserve those appointed to death.

12And repay to our neighbours sevenfold Their reproach, into their bosom, With which they have reproached You, O יהוה.

13And we, Your people and the sheep of Your pasture, We give thanks to You forever; From generation to generation we show forth Your praise.
